The custom of requesting that a priest offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for a particular intention is a beautiful and longstanding tradition of the Catholic Church. The Mass is the greatest prayer of intercession because it makes present the perfect offering of Christ to the Father through His death and Resurrection.

A Mass may be offered for the repose of the soul of a deceased loved one, for the intentions of a living person, or for another worthy intention.

Mass Intention Guidelines

Our parish Mass intention guidelines remain the same as we transition to our new online request system:

  • Mass intentions are opened three months at a time.
  • Requests may be made up to three months in advance.
  • Each family may request up to six Mass intentions per calendar year.

These guidelines help us accommodate as many parishioners as possible while allowing everyone the opportunity to have Masses offered for their loved ones and intentions.

How the New Online System Works

Beginning October 1, Mass intention requests will be submitted through our online Mass intention system. The online system allows you to select from the available Mass intention dates and provide the information needed for your request.

Please remember that dates are made available three months at a time, so not all future dates will be available when you submit your request.

What Is a Mass Intention?

The practice of offering a Mass for a particular intention is a treasured tradition of the Catholic Church. The intention may be for someone who has died, for the needs of someone who is living, or for another particular prayer intention.

The faithful traditionally make an offering, called a stipend, when requesting that a priest apply a Mass to a particular intention. This offering is not a payment for the Mass. A Mass cannot be bought or sold. Rather, the offering allows the faithful to unite themselves more closely with Christ, who offers Himself to the Father in the Holy Eucharist.

Because the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass has infinite value, the Church regulates the practice of Mass offerings through Canons 945–958 of the Code of Canon Law.

In ordinary circumstances, a priest may accept only one stipend for a particular Mass, even though the priest may offer the Mass for multiple intentions. The Church generally permits only one intention accompanied by a stipend for each Mass.

When a Mass Cannot Be Scheduled Immediately

Because Mass intentions at Prince of Peace Parish are requested well in advance, there may be times when a particular date is not available.

Remember that the merits of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass are infinite. You may also offer your own participation at Mass for the intentions of a loved one.

At the Offertory, as the priest prepares the altar, you might simply pray:

“Lord, I offer the merits of my participation at this Holy Mass, my reception of Holy Communion, and my adoration of You in the Eucharist for the intentions of my loved one.”

God is outside of time. The spiritual fruits of a Mass offered for a particular intention are not limited by the calendar date on which the Mass is celebrated. A Mass offered on a later date still brings the grace of that offering to the intention entrusted to God.
