There is no denying that volunteering for Parish ministry is a great help to the priests and the Parish staff. What most people don’t realize though is that volunteering for Parish ministry is also a great help to your own spiritual life, too!
The Catechism of the Catholic Church #900 states, “Since, like all the faithful, lay Christians are entrusted by God with the apostolate by virtue of their Baptism and Confirmation, they have the right and duty, individually or grouped in associations, to work so that the divine message of salvation may be known and accepted by all men throughout the earth. This duty is the more pressing when it is only through them that men can hear the Gospel and know Christ. Their activity in ecclesial communities is so necessary that, for the most part, the apostolate of the pastors cannot be fully effective without it.”
That last line is huge so I want to paraphrase it - your volunteer activity in the church community is so necessary that, for the most part, our pastors cannot be fully effective without it. The Church Herself is telling us that without each of us stepping up to help in ministry, our pastors, and therefore our Parishes, cannot be fully effective. We all have a responsibility to not only build up Christ’s Kingdom here in our Parish, but within the entirety of our Parish boundaries and we can only do that by having fully effective pastors and Parishes.

Serving both the community and the church has been extremely satisfying and fulfilling. And my journey has been a true blessing for me spiritually as well!” What amazing testimony on how much getting involved in ministry has influenced a fellow parishioner’s life!
